Liposuction Q & A

Santa Barbara Body Sculpting

What is liposuction?

Liposuction is an aesthetic surgical procedure that removes fat you’ve found hard to lose despite diet and exercise.

Dr. Giuffrida performs liposuction procedures on several parts of the body, including the face, thighs, buttocks, belly, and hips. There are several liposuction techniques available, and Dr. Giuffrida can help you determine which one is best for you.

What is Awake Liposuction?

Awake Liposuction, or Tumescent Liposuction, is a popular procedure where you remain conscious during the entire outpatient procedure, allowing you to communicate with Dr. Giuffrida.

This ensures that the surgery is as effective as possible, minimizing the need for potential touchups in the future. Awake Liposuction is also a more cost-effective option than regular liposuction because it doesn’t require a hospital stay.

Dr. Giuffrida is the only provider in Santa Barbara who offers this innovative, advanced liposuction method.

Is liposuction the right choice for me?

Liposuction is not a treatment for obesity, as it doesn't help you lose weight — it removes fat from targeted areas. Liposuction also doesn't remove cellulite, which is the dimpled skin you may find on hips, thighs, and buttocks.

Liposuction is best for people in excellent health. You might be a good candidate for the procedure if you:

  • Are within 30% of your ideal weight
  • Don’t smoke
  • Don’t have heart disease, diabetes, or a weak immune system.

How is liposuction performed?

Small incisions are made to the areas of your body where liposuction will be performed. A thin tube, called a cannula, is inserted into the incisions to loosen the excess fat. Then the loosened fat is removed using a syringe or surgical vacuum.

How should I prepare for liposuction?

Dr. Giuffrida lets you know if your procedure involves local or general anesthesia. If general anesthesia is used, you’ll need to stop eating and drinking several hours before the procedure, as directed by the doctor, and arrange for someone else to drive you home.

You may have to stop taking some medications before the procedure, such as pain relievers or anti-inflammatory drugs, to reduce the chance of bleeding during or after the procedure.

What is the recovery process after liposuction?

Dr. Giuffrida may cover the treated areas of your body with elastic bandages or a compression garment to help reduce swelling and allow your skin to mold to the new body contours.

Dr. Giuffrida gives you instructions on how to care for the incision sites including:

  • Any medications you need to take to prevent infection or speed healing
  • How to check the surgical sites
  • When to have your follow-up visit
  • Whether you’ll need to have stitches removed
  • When you can go back to exercising and other regular activities.
